Common Cancers in Women Cervical Cancer

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus, commonly called the mouth of the uterus.

Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the cervix grow ‘out of control.’ These abnormal cells are caused by a viral infection called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

You get infected with HPV through unprotected sexual contact with someone who has it. There are many types of HPV, some cause genital warts but some types have no symptoms at all.

If you have any of the symptoms of breast cancer your doctor will do a breast examination and possibly send you for further tests such as Breast Ultra- Sound, Mammogram, Or Breast Biopsy Treatment.

There are many options, most women undergo surgery and receive Radiotherapy/Chemotherapy/ Hormone Therapy.

Common Cancers in Men - Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a small gland found between the bladder and the penis. It produces fluid that protects the sperm.

Prostate cancer begins when some cells in the prostate become abnormal. There is no known cause for Prostate cancer.

If you are 40 years/older or have any of the symptoms mentioned above, visit your doctor who will perform a rectal exam to feel for the size and texture of the prostate. You may also get your blood drawn to test for prostate specific antigen (PSA) which will be higher than normal if you have prostate cancer. PSA and rectal examination can detect prostate cancer at it’s earliest.

Liver Cancer

The liver filters the blood, removes toxins and chemicals from the blood and many other important functions. Primary liver cancer is cancer that starts in the liver.

A pap smear is a test that doctors/nurses do to detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous. Detecting these abnormal cells early means you can get treatment early, preventing cervical cancer.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the breast. It can occur in both men and women but is more common in women.

Hiv Related Cancer Kaposi’s SARCOMA

Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a type of cancer that mainly affects the skin and mouth and causes tumors below the skin surface, It is caused by Human Herpes Virus-8 (HH V -8).

Your doctor may diagnose KS just by looking at the skin. If necessary, a small sample of the skin may be cut out and sent to the lab to confirm the diagnosis

In many cases the best way to treat KS is to start highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)

  • Due to weakened immune systems, people with HIV/AIDS are more likely to develop KS.
